ERMC advances validate industry honor
Mark Warde - Ennis News
Securing their place in the heart of the community, the Ennis Regional Medical Center is a legitimate choice by the Chamber of Commerce as the recipient of the 2018 Industry of the Year award.
The health care center now provides most services found in larger cities, sans the travel woes, and many of the services have become available on an outpatient basis. Their general health care service is highly important to this town of 20,000 residents, plus it is a large employer of over 160 full-time and part-time staff.
“This year we selected ERMC as recipient of the Industry of the Year because of their support of various non-profits in our community,” said the president of the Chamber, Jeannette Patak. “We are blessed to have a hospital in our hometown.”
Studies have shown that having a hospital in a community is a solid economic development tool because when people consider moving their family or a business to the area, having access to good health care is a critical advantage.
Recent winners of this award include:
2018 Ennis Regional Medical Center
2017 Prosperity Bank
2016 Blackland Building Supply
2015 First State Bank
2014 Polyguard Products
2013 Ennis State Bank
2012 Oncor Electric Delivery
There are three primary reasons that ERMC has accomplished that support the honor as merited.
4 Star Rating
The Ennis community and surrounding areas now have a 4 star rated hospital according to CMS* to care for residents. They are a true community-based hospital, working in the community and for the community.
Bolstering their own service to patients, ERMC contracted with a dedicated hospitalist group this year to provide quality care for our patients while they are in the hospitalwith a hospitalist company to provide physician coverage for all inpatient and ICU patients..
Progress in Upgrades
The hospital has shown a strong commitment to making improvements in quality healthcare, including the addition of the cardiac rehabilitation center a year ago. The upgrades are evident in outstanding quality scores in addition to the CMS 4 star rating.
Community outreach for ERMC has increased significantly since the arrival of CEO, Bob Honeycutt. For example:
- 2017 Lights of Ennis Title Sponsor
- 2018 Ennis Bluebonnet Festival Title Sponsor
- 2018 Lights of Ennis Sponsor
Plus, they provide annual free sports physicals for Ennis ISD junior high and high school students. Honeycutt, himself, is a regular fan, attending a number of Ennis sporting events, including one that he has years of experience as a coach – basketball.
ERMC is involved in the Chamber of Commerce as well as the Economic Development Corporation.
They maintain clinical affiliations and rotations with students from Navarro College and the Ennis ISD.
Another area they provide is the Friends of ERMC. It is a monthly membership program for adults 55 and older. Its popularity has attracted hundreds of members and averages 125 in attendance each month.
Contacted for his comments on the recognition given ERMC by the Chamber of Commerce, Honeycutt offered a passionate response.
“It is truly an honor to be selected as the 2018 Industry of the Year by the Ennis Chamber of Commerce. ERMC is proud to be a member of the community and we truly strive to fulfill our mission of Making Communities Healthier,” he said.
“We envision our role to be a community asset – providing local community residents with quality healthcare in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, while also addressing our responsibility to be a strong community advocate and ambassador working with the City of Ennis, Ellis County, the Ennis Chamber of Commerce and the Ennis Economic Development Committee.”
Honeycutt acknowledged the strength of what is happening at ERMC is a direct reflection of a comprehensive team approach from the board of trustees, medical staff and employees throughout the hospital. He made a point to emphasize they provide a culture of quality and patient safety and help deliver strong clinical outcomes in their service lines.
In commenting on five fundamental principles ERMC currently utilize utilizes in improving their patient service, he pointed to communication, patient safety and an integrated delivery of care for leading to strong patient satisfaction.
The reviews of patients have expressed a sharp rise in fulfillment, which has sparked an increase in the number of patients now coming to the hospital.
Honeycutt praised the medical staff for their work, crediting it is their “ability to get our patients back to their families and into the community again.”
